At Plainfield Dental Care, we often come across damaged teeth that are the result of not only bad oral health, a result of common and frequent bad habits. Everyday habits that we think seem innocent could actually be harming us. We’ve developed a list of those habits to be aware of and hopefully stop!
- Using Your Teeth as a Tool: We are often guilty of ripping off tags and opening bags with our teeth. After all, they are sharp and sturdy! However, it’s best to use an actual tool, like scissors or a knife in place of our teeth. Prepare yourself so that you are better equipped in the future to open and remove items with actual tools instead of your teeth.
- Biting Your Nails: Not only is nail biting unhygienic (think of the debris you often find under your nails), but it is also detrimental to your teeth. Similar to using your teeth as a tool, biting your hard, tough nails can also harm the teeth. Kick the bad habit by getting a manicure or using specific nail polish that prevents and deters nail biting.
- Chewing Ice: While it may seem refreshing, chewing ice put unnecessary pressure on your teeth. If chewing is something that you must do, try chewing gum. This way, you’re not only cleaning your teeth, but you’re avoiding potential harm to your teeth by chewing something softer-and sweeter!
- Using Toothpicks Incorrectly: Using a toothpick after you eat is in fact a good way to remove plaque and leftover food. However, frequent and over-aggressive use of toothpicks can be harmful. We recommend using toothpicks sparingly and gently after you eat. At the end of the day, flossing and brushing are the best ways to clean your teeth and mouth!
