Back to School Dental Tips for Your Children from Dr. Ferdkoff at Plainfield Dental Care

It’s the end of August, which means children are heading back to school. With new school clothes and new school supplies, it’s important to make sure your children are equipped with the tools and guidance needed for a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene. At Plainfield Dental Care, as we are underway with our “back to school” dental appointments, we’ve outlined our best back to school dental tips for your children.

  1. Plainfield Dental Care: Back to School Dental Tips for Your ChildrenMake sure your children have had their “back to school” dental appointments. These appointments are just as important as back to school immunizations and physical assessments and should be part of your back to school preparations. Parents and teachers may not be aware of any dental problems in children, so regular checkups are preventative in diagnosing any potential problems.
  2. Make sure your children have a regular routine of brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least twice a day. When you’re out shopping for your back to school needs like notebooks and backpacks, head to the dental aisle to ensure you have everything you need there as well. Stock up on toothbrushes and remember to change your child’s toothbrush at least once per season or after an illness.
  3. Make sure your children are heading back to school with healthy lunches and snacks. Grains, milk, cheese, yogurts, fruits and vegetables are all beneficial to not only their dental health but their overall wellbeing! Cut back on sugary foods and beverages. If your child is given a school lunch in the school cafeteria, review healthy food items with them before their first day.
  4. Make sure your child wearing a properly fitted mouthguard if they are involved in after-school sports. It’s even a good idea for them to bring a mouthguard to school in case they need it for gym class or recess. Playground activities and athletics are the leading cause of mouth injuries in children, so it’s imperative to equip them with proper safety equipment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay affects U.S. children more than any other infectious disease. Dental issues and diseases are not only painful and dangerous for children, but they can also lead to difficulty in playing, learning, speaking and eating. Be preventative as you head back to school this year, and keep your dental health in mind by avoiding unnecessary dental fillings!
