Brushing and flossing daily is vital for oral health. During the day, plaque from bacteria builds up on the teeth. The plaque from bacteria secrete acids that over time weaken the teeth and promote tooth decay. We recommend that you brush for two minutes twice a day and floss once a day. This will help keep harmful bacteria and plaque at bay, freshen breath, and whiten your smile.

Make Water Your Beverage of Choice

The benefits that proper hydration has for your body are just as true for your teeth. A healthy mouth should be non-acidic, or neutral with a pH of 7.0 or above. Acidity weakens the teeth, and minimizing the amount of contact your teeth have with acidity will promote a healthier mouth. Drink water with meals to rinse harmful foods from the surface of your teeth and rebalance the pH of your mouth. Sipping on water instead of juice or coffee between meals will hydrate the mouth tissue and keep acidity at a normal level.

Avoid Processed Foods

The food you fuel your body with reflects directly on your oral health. Processed foods are high in sugar and starch, which turn into harmful sugar more quickly than whole foods. Sugar makes the mouth more acidic, accelerating decay. Try replacing processed foods with whole foods such as fruits, veggies, and grains. These foods have more fiber and crunch, naturally cleansing your teeth as you eat.

Quit Using Tobacco Products

Tobacco can cause cavities, tooth discoloration, gum recession, gum disease, and throat, lung and oral cancer. Smokers are twice as likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers. Giving up tobacco products will substantially improve your health and reduce the chance of tooth loss.

See Your Dentist Every Six Months

Six months seems like a short time, but a lot can change with your teeth in that time. Getting your teeth professionally cleaned will remove tartar buildup that cannot be removed at home. In addition, going in for regular check-ups will ensure your dentist will catch any dental problems you may have early on. Seeing your dentist at least twice a year will make certain you and your mouth are happy and healthy.
